Abstract

|
The present study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between the concentrations of prolactin in cord blood and the incidence of respiratory distress syndrome, and also to ascertain the influence of pregnancy induced hypertension on
levels of
prolactin in cord blood.
Cord prolactin levels from newborns of women with pregnancy induced hypertension exceeded those from newborns of women with normal pregnancies (P<0.05).
Umbilical cord serum levels of prolactin tended to be lower in infants who subsequently developed respiratory distress syndrome than in newborns who did not develop respiratory distress syndrome(P<0.05).
The risk for respiratory distress syndrome was lower in infants delivered by pregnancy induced hypertension women than in infants delivered by uncomplicated women(P<0.05).
Such findings are suggestive that chronic intrauterine stress associated with maternal hypertension may lead to increased fetal prolactin production which may play a role in lung maturation in the developing human fetus.
